Ajay Bhatt was born in Baroda, India in 1957 and he is currently 66 years old. Bhatt started his university education at Baroda College but finished his degree at the City University of New York. He then went on to work for Intel, where he has helped boost the company.
Bhatt is known as the inventor of the Universal Serial Bus, aka the USB. Before he created the USB, different manufactures used different ports, making the process of connecting devices unnecessarily difficult for users. He created the USB to make it easier to connect outside hardware, like printers, to personal computers (PCs).
Companies were weary about the USB at first, but it soon took off. Today, the USB is used in almost every device, from computers to scientific instruments. Billions have been sold world-wide, but Ajay Bhatt and his team did not get any direct income from it. Bhatt had decided not to patent the invention, saying that if this invention helps make computers more accessible, and helps the market for them grow, the increased sales are the biggest profit.
In 2013, Bhatt won the European Inventor Award in honor of the invention of the USB. Although the USB is his most known invention, Ajay Bhatt owns over 130 patents for other inventions that he has made to improve technology and make it more accessible. One example is the AGP bus connector, which helped improve graphics cards.
